Metrology Training for Indonesia

1 April 2009

Recently the Indonesian national metrology institute (KIM-LIPI) initiated a large-scale project to upgrade its measurement capabilities.

The project, which received significant funding from the Islamic Development Bank, comprises procurement of new equipment and training of personnel. With the procurement phase completed, KIM-LIPI now boasts much state-of the art equipment, some of the best worldwide.

Three MSL scientists, Chris Sutton, Mark Fitzgerald, and Peter Saunders, were invited by KIM-LIPI to provide metrology training in the areas of mass, pressure, density, and radiation thermometry. The training took place over ten days at the end of November and beginning of December 2008. It consisted of both practical and theoretical aspects relating to the realisation and maintenance of the primary SI scales of measurement in these areas, and techniques for transferring these scales to users’ instruments.
