The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.

In proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, the United Nations recognized the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies have improved our lives. MSL provides physical standards for the measurement of light traceable to the International System of units (SI). These standards provide reliable and international recognised measurements of detectors and sources of light, and of the optical properties of materials.  During 2015 MSL is planning activities relating to the International Year of light so watch this space.
